Electropolishing for Copper and Brass

As the third most widely used metal after iron and aluminum, according to the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Minerals Information Center, copper is valued for its durability, electrical conductivity, and corrosion resistance.

Electropolishing is valued for its ability to enhance these attributes, which is why manufacturers of copper parts for electrical products, motors, plumbing equipment, heat exchangers and electric vehicles often specify electropolishing as the last step in the manufacturing of their parts.

Companies around the world submit their machined parts made from copper for electropolishing treatment provided by Able, the world’s largest electropolishing specialist and a pioneer of the process.

The Able electropolishing process enhances the finish, fit and function of copper parts with a precise and customized electro-chemical process that eliminates surface defects and improves the microfinish by up to 50%. In addition, electropolishing leaves parts in a passive state, protecting the finish from oxidation.

Electropolishing is also highly effective as a pre-plating process, for parts like electrical contacts that are often plated with gold and other materials. Electropolishing leaves part edges free of burrs and slightly radiused, which minimizes the risk of plating buildup.

Example: A manufacturer of beryllium copper contacts for a 2-way radio came to Able Electropolishing looking for a solution for conductivity problems experienced by their customer. By eliminating the die break around the edges prior to plating, electropolishing resolved the problem.

Electropolishing for Brass & Bronze Alloys

Typically made from a combination of copper and zinc, brass parts, and a few bronze alloys, also benefit from the electropolishing process. Results include corrosion resistance, enhanced fatigue life, an improved microfinish and a high-shine finish for parts that include lock components, hinges, gears, couplings, nozzles, and other parts used in electrical engineering, plumbing and the automotive industry.
